To Utah and Back: A Week in Pictures

A few weeks ago we drove 21 hours in two days to get to Cedar City, Utah, to visit John's parents.  6 days later, we drove 21 hours in two days to get back home.  The driving part stank.  The visit was great.  Here is our trip, in pictures.

Near Amarillo, we stopped at a rest area for a picnic lunch.  This sign was posted by our table.  Texas rocks.  Northwest texas is beautiful.  All red dirt and butter yellow grass and bright green foliage.  Loved it.

It was windy.  But when is it not windy in Texas?

Northern new Mexico is about the ugliest place I've ever seen.  I was glad when we got to:

Northern Arizona is gorgeous.  Did you know there is a volcano in Arizona?  And pine trees?  Libby had to pee when we were out in the middle of nowhere, so we pulled over in the trees and she went in someone's front yard.  Now she looks at the map and talks about that time in Arizona when we let her pee outside.  There's more to that story, but I choose to not disclose it at this time :)

Happy Travelers.  For the moment.

Not so happy traveler.

I took lots of pictures hanging out the car window with my iphone.  They all pretty much look the same.  Big rocks.

FINALLY!

Snow mountains!

We arrived.  We hung out.  We went to the playground.  We ate good food made by my mother-in-law.  John went to Provo for a night to see U2 with his brother.  I stayed back with the kids and made Jaina's birthday cake.  The kids helped by licking the frosting knives.  We live dangerously.

Jaina's cake!  My first decorating attempt.

John and I pretty much relaxed while the grandparents entertained the kids.

We went "hiking" in Kolob Canyon.  It was gorgeous.  There were flies EVERYWHERE!  The kids made it up to the top of the trail, but Malachi had to be carried back down while I had to drag the girls along to keep them moving.  But it was a lot of fun.  We saw cactus and flowers that smelled like cinnamon, and this guy:

Libby wanted to catch him and take him home.  I said "no".

Not sure who took this picture, but it's where the kids played for hours with rocks and cars.  That's it.  Why can't they entertain themselves like that at my house?

The kids with Grandma and Grandpa.  I think this is the 10th picture we had to take before Malachi quit trying to give Grandpa a bloody nose-by-headbutt.  Grandpa is thrilled, cantcha tell?

View from the back patio.  Not too shabby.  Beats my falling-down wooden fence and neighbor's brick wall view any day.

I took 2 whole pictures on the drive back to Texas.  This is one of them.  Lucky you.

Now, I'm not a big fan of car trips, especially car trips with kids, but I tell you what, we saw such majesty and splendor on the second day of our drive that is was totally worth it.  Makes me reconsider my "I'll never move to Utah" statement.  And if we had flown, Libby wouldn't be able to declare that she peed in the grass in Arizona.  It's all about the memories.
