Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Hubby Gone?

After 5 gate changes and 2 terminal changes (AFTER he got through security!), John finally made it to Atlanta. He'll be there until Thursday night, leaving me here (by myself!) with the girls. I'm not sure how I'll stay sane, since I spend my days counting down the hours until John gets home from work.

Tonight went smoothly, hopefully the start of a trend. Jaina was happy to lay in her bed while I read books and sang to Libby. Libby went straight to sleep. Jaina nursed and went to sleep. And now it's my turn! Here's hoping we all sleep well tonight!

Jaina is still having trouble nursing at times. Sometimes she gets right to it, no problem. Other times she screams. When that happens, I try laying down to nurse. If that doesn't work, I rock her to sleep (which takes about 5 minutes), and once she's asleep, she'll nurse. At times none of those things work. I tried pumping some the other day before we went out to run errands. I didn't want to deal with her erratic habits trying to nurse her in public. Unfortunately, in an effort to save money, I had bought the cheapest pump Target carries. And it stinks. It doesn't work well and it hurts like the dickens to use. When John walked out of the bathroom and saw me crying while pumping. he decided it was time to invest in a good pump - namely, a Medela. Man, let me tell you, I feel pampered when I use that thing!

Jaina is starting to show a pattern with her nursing - she'll nurse laying down in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning. Mid-morning sessions are successful only if she is asleep. Around lunchtime she'll only take a bottle. Early afternoon she'll nurse laying down again. Dinnertime - asleep or a bottle. After dinner and all evening - perfectly happy to nurse while awake and with me sitting on the couch. What is going on here? I'm a little stressed about this arrangement because now I don't know if I'll be able to nurse her in public. The big concern right now is my upcoming trip - do I take frozen milk to the airport and on the plane, hoping I can find a place to thaw and warm it, or do I take nothing and pray that she will be willing to nurse without screaming? I'm hoping she will even out this week and it won't even be an issue. Like I needed one more thing to stress over regarding this trip!

I've already started packing - I have Libby's entertainment bag packed, most of the snack bag packed, and the diaper bag packed. I have all my lists made and will start packing our clothes and stuff tomorrow night. I'm also getting a shopping list together of all the things I forgot I needed - film, chapstick, crayons, etc. I'm hoping to get most of it done so I can cross that worry off my "Things to Have Panic Attacks Over" list. I am really looking forward to the trip, it's just the prep that's freaking me out! Traveling with kids is so stressful!

Only 6 more days, and I'm outta here!

Cory traveled more when Ian was little. I dreaded the trips. I'm glad he doesn't have to so much anymore. :) I like having him around! I hope you guys have lots of fun and get everything you need to done. And that everyone is super good for you. Good luck with the nursing thing. I have no advice, just well wishes. Can't wait to hear how things go! Love you guys!

Hey Kristen,

Do you happen to have over active let down, or over supply syndrome? The type of nursing pattern you are describing makes me think that nursing is quite a chore for your little girl, and she only likes to nurse when she is tired (but not over tired), or when you milk flow is naturally less (in the evenings). If you think this may be the case, I have lots of tips for you. You can email me. erinbehnke (@) yahoo.com
