Thank Goodness for Washable Crayons

About a month or so ago, I bought Libby her first box of crayons. I wanted the 20-count box on sale for $0.74, but since it was the Friday before school started, Wal-Mart was, of course, sold out. So, I opted for the $2.64 8-count box of chubby Washable crayons. It was a hard decision to make, to spend that much on only 8 crayons. But, I thought, I will probably be glad for the washable-ness. So I bought them.

Libby loves her crayons. She loves to color and draw with them. A few times she has made some marks on her clothes, and they wash out fine. Haven't really thought if that would happen with regular crayons. Then, the big test.

A few days ago I was feeling under the weather. I spent pretty much the whole day in bed feeling sorry for myself. Libby entertained herself all day by emptying every single basket, drawer, and cupboard in the hotel rooms. After her (really short) nap, she pulled the diaper bag off the dresser and pulled everything out, including the little flat cardboard piece at the bottom. She found her bag of crayons and her notebook, and after I opened the bag for her, she sat and colored happily in her notebook. After a while she got bored and started walking around with her brown crayon. Danger signals started going off, but man, I so did not want to get out of bed. She reached out and very slowly, very carefully, ran the crayon down the wall. Then she did it again. And again. I was almost done with the debate in my head over whether or not I wanted to stay in bed more than I wanted to stop her when I remembered, "These are washable!". So I let her have at it. John came home an hour later. I showed him her artwork and he said "good thing they're washable", and then put her crayons away and said "looks like coloring is a sitting at the table activity now". I left her masterpiece up on the walls.

Today I realized I have 3 days to pack everything for the move on Saturday. 2 days really, since I am going to spend tomorrow at various appointments and errands (one more trip to the dentist, they have to redo my impression for my nightguard), inspect the apartment, etc. So I thought I better get rid of the crayon on the walls before the maid stops by. I got a wet washcloth, wondering if I would need soap, and just how hard would I need to scrub? Not hard at all, and no, I didn't need soap. When Crayola says washable, they mean washable. If the wals hadn't been "stylishly" (I use the term loosely) textured, it would have taken me one minute instead of two to get all the brown crayon off the white walls. How great is that? Dangit, I should have taken a picture!

I think this is another example of why you don't fit into the typical mold of "first time mom". :)

Here's a handy tip - WD 40. It takes out crayon from all sorts of places...walls, clothes, you name it. We decided to invest in the industrial size can.
