The night we moved into our apartment, the smoke detector in our bedroom started beeping. Great, run our to the store at 10 pm to get batteries for the dumb thing. So John gets home and replaces the battery. In order to get to the battery console area thingy he had to disconnect the entire unit from the ceiling. So he gets the battery in and tries to replace the smoke detector to it's base on the ceiling. Mayhem! All 4 of our smoke detectors start blaring at once, including the one in Libby's room! (proof that Libby sleeps through anything - the alarms didn't wake her up!) So John disconnected it and the alarms stopped. Then the plastic knob on the bathtub faucet broke into 3 pieces, and then the toilet tank in the hall bathroom wouldn't refill after flushing. Good grief, all these things to fix! But wait, we don't have to fix them, we live in an apartment. We have, na na na na, MAINTENANCE!!!!
I put a call into the office and a few hours later, 2 guys show up with a ladder and armfuls of supplies and make short work of all our mini-disasters (the wires in the smoke detector were crossed, hence the alarms). About 30 minutes later they trooped back out and all was well.
A few days ago it got real cold here in the Lone Star State. We closed our windows and turned on our heat. Nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada. No heat, and an overnight low of high 30s. John finally yanked the thermostat around a bit and got the heat to turn on. The temp skyrocketed to the eighties before John was able to convince the heat to turn off. This happened a few more times during the night when it got real cold. Once again I called the maintenance superheroes. This morning Super Guy Wearing A Blue Sweatshirt showed up on my doorstep with a new thermostat. Now the heat turns off and on all by itself. How novel!
Needless to say, we are happy to be back in a place that fixes everything for free, instead of us having to pay out of pocket for all the little (and big) things that can go wrong.
We also like the pool :)
