Well folks, today I went in for my 20-week ultrasound. Dr. Chartrand, who just opened a family practice inside the birth center did it. John has wanted to know the sex, I was undecided, even as Dr. Chartrand squirted (very cold!) gel onto my tummy. He took some time looking around and trying to get a good view of the baby's head so he could begin taking measurements. We got a good view of the baby sucking it's thumb. Yes, we have a thumb-sucker. Already. Visions of painting thumbs with peroxide in 5 years cloud my mind, but a greater thought prevails. It was darn cute to see my little fetus going to town on that thumb! Here is a shot of it from the top of the head, the hand is that little white spot to the right of the circle.

The heart looks great and has a strong beat, and the umbilical cord contains all the arteries it should (Libby's only had one artery, instead of two). Dr. Chartrand thinks my due date may be a week off, but I had figured that anyway because of the obscenely long cycles I had been having this summer. So, although May 11 is my "due date" we shouldn't be surprised if baby comes a week or so later. He said it was hard to tell because the measurements of the head, stomach, and femur did not "agree" (according to the computer) on a date. I knew this baby was trouble!
Now, the only problem we encountered was that the baby is sitting breech, with it's bum settled as deeply in my pelvis as it could possibly get. Dr. Chartrand tried and tried to get what he called "the money shot", but it was not to be. All we could get was a jumble of arms and legs. So my decision was made for me. He suggested I come back in a month and try again. John said "Only if it's buy one, get one free". Dr. Chartrand said, "It is buy one, get one free. I can't deliver the goods, and you deserve to know". Also, he couldn't get any clear shots of the baby's organs besides the heart, so a second one is necessary anyway.
So check back again in 4 weeks and maybe I'll be able to tell you more.
