Friday we decided that our short time together would be better spent at the zoo than at home doing laundry. And we forgot it was conference weekend. So Saturday morning we packed up at headed for the Fort Worth Zoo, one of two area zoos, and the one the most people said they liked. The trip there was a bit of an adventure, Mapquest had us going all the way around our elbows to get to our ears, but we finally arrived. Libby got in a short nap on the way. We lathered on sunscreen in the parking lot and we were off!
It didn't take long to realize that the Fort Worth Zoo is a whole lot older than the Ashboro Zoo. Despite it's age, it has tried to make the exhibits as large and comfortable for the animals as possible. I don't like the lack of room to roam, but I did like having the animals so close. We got some really great pictures, but none of me as I was the one behind the camera 99% of the time (as usual). The weather was perfect - cool and sunny - and all the animals were out enoying the sunshine. Pictures will come whenever I get around to developing my film (still waiting for a digital camera, hint, hint).
Libby had a great time running around and seeing the animals she is used to seeing on the TV. It took her a while to make the connection that the elephants were elephants, but once that connection was made she trumpeted her little heart out. And she roared at the lion. And made monkey noises at the many monkeys. She liked the chimpanzees - one had a broken-down box that he would slide around the exhibit, backing up into a corner to get a running start, then sliding down a small dip into a pile of hay. She laughed and laughed each time he zoomed by. She also like the giraffe exhibit - the exhibit was separated from us by a small pond stocked with turtles, 3-ft long goldfish, and geese. Every time we tried to leave the area she would turn around, yell "quack, quack", and run back. John took her to see the kangaroos once while I rested and said she kept trying to climb in to their area. She had a really fun time.
We decided to go home after seeing about half of the zoo. We were tired, Libby was cranky, and my Braxton-Hicks contractions were hitting full force, easing up if I sat down but coming back as soon as I stood up. I could only cheer them on - it means less work for me later (BH contractions had me 3 cm dialted with Libby a week before she was born). However, the contractions plus the ever-increasing need to pee plus a day of being up on my feet resulted in quite a waddle. As we were walking out, John said "well, if anyone is sad about missing the penguins (the exhibit opens next week), they can just come see you!".

Haha. I love John's comment. It sounds like a fun day, but I can certainly identify with the waddle. By the time you're where you are, you just don't have any other choice. Its good you can laugh about it. :) Hope you're managing this week. Hang in there. :)
