About once a year we give Hobbit a bath and shave him down. We started this about a year after we got him, at the beginning of the summer in Georgia, so he would be comfortable while outside prowling. Even after the great flea invasion of 2003, when Hobbit became an indoor-only cat, we continued the tradition. Hobbit hates to be brushed, so we attack him every once in a while to remove the mats. After being shaved, he can go 6 or 7 months before his hair is long enough to mat.
When we got back from our trip last week, Hobbit's fur was one big mat. It seems stress mats him up faster than he usually does. I contemplated the mats, I contemplated the clippers, then I contemplated my belly and finally decided that $60 at the vet's office was money well spent. This is what Hobbit usually looks like:

I couldn't get the goober to stand still long enough for a good shot. He's pretty ticked at me right now.
